You get a lot of mediocrity for your 400-450 dollar. The two weakest links of the 2014 base Mac Mini are the slow dual core laptop CPU and painfully slow 5400 RPM hard drive that comes standard.

I am most familiar with K12 IT treatment of macs but there may be some other customers where very low per-unit OSX is important. For people like me that run lots of threaded applications, that's a huge disincentive to purchase a new Mac mini. As expected, that's a whopping near-50% speed reduction from the best 2012 model, and less than a 10% improvement for a single core.
